The Judy Drive-in

The days are getting longer and freckles are starting to pop up on my son's nose at a rapid pace. That means it is time to start thinking about the family time in the summer. This was my son's first year in school and we are really looking forward to a summer free of homework and less stringent bedtimes!

In Mt. Sterling there is a place that will help you and your family create memories that will last past the summer.

Judy's Drive-in, is the name of the spot I am referring to! Prices are less than general admission for the movies in the theater and the price includes a double feature! Bonus! Adults are $7, children 5-11 are $2 and kids under 5 are free!

There is something rather magical about going as a family to the movies and snuggling together in the car while watching the flicks! We would probably take our truck and put lots of blankets and pillows in the bed and lay under the stars to watch!

You can put some snacks together picnic style before you leave your house or you could grab a burger, chili cheese fries or a funnel cake at Judy's. Come to think of it just plan on eating at Judy's, you don't want to have to cook before you go, plus you know that your kids are going to want the drive in food once they get there!

So throw bedtimes to the wind and go hang out with your family in Mount Sterling at Judy's Drive in!

Kentucky Family Fun explores Shelby County!

The tourism agency granted admission and hosted the writer to some of the following for purpose of review

When the amazing people over at the Shelby KY Tourism Commission & Visitors Bureau invited me to take part in exploring their great area, on a Diva's weekend I jumped at the chance!

My time in Shelby County started with some shopping at the outlet mall, the Outlet Shoppes of the Bluegrass.  My mom tagged along with me for this trip. With an iced coffee from Ghiradelli in hand we were ready to conquer the deals! I got toys for my boys at the Toys R Us outlet, a crazy deal on a Kate Spade wallet, and a Fossil watch for my hubs.

We had worked up quite an appetite after shopping for about 2 hours, so from the outlet mall we drove about 15 minutes into the heart of Shelbyville. We had lunch at the historic Science Hill Inn, the inn was formerly a prep school for girls. I sat in the dining room thinking that if the walls could talk there would be so many amazing stories! Mom ordered the Georgian and I had the shrimp and grits. Both dishes were wonderfully prepared and scarfed
down quickly after our hard shopping day!

The restaurant is housed inside of the Wakefield - Scarce galleries (still the old site of the girls prep school) once we left the dining room we had the option to check out the shops, which we were more than happy to do! If you love antique furniture and amazing silver pieces then you need to be prepared to spend a few hours here.

Next on our list was Main Street! There are so many cute independently owned shops we truly could have spent 2 or 3 hours traipsing in and out of them. We only were able to make it into two shops (sadly) but we loved them both! The Tipsy Gypsy and The Polka Dotted Pineapple were so cute! I bought a new t-shirt and mom got a bracelet from the Tipsy Gypsy. In the Polka Dotted Pineapple in addition to the very high quality consignment clothes, there were also beautiful hats, I have my eye on a few fascinators!

The next stop on our adventure was Making Ends Meet. This shop has been around for years selling fabrics mainly, but they are shifting their focus starting in May. They will be offering classes for people who want to spend some time together and be crafty! Check out their website for more details as the classes are all so very different. During my visit, Leslie the owner guided mom and I through how to make fabric beads. I made two smaller ones that can be used as earrings and mom made a larger bead that can be a pendant on a necklace. Who knew that you could make fabric beads?! Not this girl.

After our crafting stop mom and I were worn out, so we headed to our hotel to put our bags down and feet up for just a few minutes. We stayed at the Best Western, it was perfect for our trip. We didn't need anything fancy, just a clean room with comfy beds which is exactly what we had!

Once we caught our breath and recharged for a moment we headed for a wine tasting before dinner. I had no idea that there was a winery in Shelby co, but friends this is a place that you don't want to miss! The winery is called Talon Winery and the people working are as nice as you they can be! If you join their wine club, wine tastings are free for you and a guest. The wine club is free to join all that is expected is a commitment to purchase 12 wines in one year. Wine club members get 15% all purchases, including the purchases of wine that you make! I loved every wine that I tried, and I got to try 6 during our tasting! They don't serve food but you are welcome to bring a picnic lunch or order a pizza to be delivered to the location. On Friday and Saturday they have live music, so grab your girlfriends and make it a girls night!

After our wine tasting we were so hungry so we headed back to Main street for some dinner, my rule whenever I travel is that I eat somewhere local, and somewhere I haven't been before! We ended up at Lo Cocina de Mama, which is a Mexican restaurant. I love Mexican food, I could eat it for every meal and still want more. This restaurant was very unique in that the food was presented beautifully. Typically Mexican places kind of just plop all of the food on the plate, this was not the case at Lo Cocina de Mama!

After our meal my mom and I headed back to the hotel, we were exhausted from our day of fun. In the morning we grabbed a quick bite to eat at the complementary continental breakfast and headed back to reality.

We had a great time in Shelbyville, and even though I was only a few miles from my home it was so nice to get away from it all for a day!

Shark Bridge at The Newport Aquarium.

It is no secret that we love visiting the Newport Aquarium, it seems like they are aways adding new things to do and see.

The latest addition, hasn't even opened yet, but you can enter to win a chance to give the exhibit a whirl before anyone else! That can be done here.

The attraction is called Shark Bridge, and it is exactly what it seems like! The Shark Bridge is a suspended over nearly 2 dozen sharks. Let that sink in for just a second, it is a bridge that is just inches above the tank where the shark tank sits.

If you are a Newport Aquarium season pass holder, you can attend a special event where you are given the chance to cross the bridge prior to the exhibit opening to the public! That event takes place on April 29th and will feature chicken nuggets from Chick-fil-a, exclusive animal encounters in addition to other fun activities! You can find out more about this event just for pass holders here.

Do you think you are brave enough to cross? It makes me nervous just looking at it!

There is something for everyone at the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Event!

United States Equestrian Federation rider, Boyd Martin, competes in Eventing.
You guys, I realize that I am being slightly sacrilegious by talking about other types of horses besides racehorses this close to Derby. However, I wouldn't be doing my job as your Kentucky finder of family fun if I left this out!

The Rolex Kentucky Three Day is the cream of the crop when it comes to horse shows, it is the Kentucky Derby of horse shows so to speak. This particular show is a 3 day eventing show, on the olympic level. Before I lose you, please know that there is so much more to this event than just being able to be in the presence of these majestic horses and skilled riders.

This year the show is geared towards families in a way that it never has been before. They are offering a Land Rover sponsored event called the Young Driver's Adventure. Children ages 4 - 8 are invited to give an off roading course a shot, all while driving in an electric mini Land Rover.

If you are able to sneak away with out the kids, there a lot of things for the grown ups, like Maker's Mark Bourbon Tastings, taking part in the Land Rover Tailgating challenge, think awesome prizes for the best decorated, most creative and best catered tailgating.

The event takes place in Lexington at the Kentucky Horse Park April 23 -26th. You can check out the official website here.

Leitchfield Aquatic Center

Last week we told you about the new aquatic center coming to Frankfort. We didn't want to leave out the fine folks of Leitchfield! They have an aquatic center that is pretty awesome too, and it is already open, well it well be when it opens for the season.

Read the specifics about the aquatic center from their website:
"Our aquatic center features a zero depth entry into our main 217,000 gallon pool. The zero depth entry also features a large splash and play structure. Our pool's depth slopes from 3 ft 5 inches to the deepest area (over the diving well) at 11 ft 6 inches. Our center also features a three story un-covered slide, plunging into the catch pool with a depth of 3 ft 5 inches. One of our most popular attractions is our winding lazy river. You can grab a tube (we provide tubes free of cost) and just let the current take you away. If you have small children, we have a separate tot pool reaching a depth of only 1 ft. Also in the tot pool there is an exploration water feature as well as a water frog slide."

Admission is $7 for people 16 and older, $6 ages 6 - 15, $5 ages 3-5, and $2 ages 2 and under.

Season passes are also available starting at $125 for a single membership and $225 for a family of 4.

The aquatic center opens for the season on May 23rd.

Barren River Lake - Located in Lucas, KY (this is near Bowling Green)There is a lodge on the property and several walking trails to round out all of the fun lake activities.

Buckhorn Lake - Located in Buckhorn, KY. There is a lodge on the property, the lodge overlooks the 1,200 acre lake.

Cave Run Lake - Located in Morehead, KY. This lake doesn't have specific lodges or cabins on the property, however there are area rentals services that you can use. Check out this website for more info.

Dale Hollow Lake - Located in Burkesville, KY. There is a lodge located on the property that sits on a cliff overlooking the massive lake.
