Skiing and Snow Tubing in Kentucky

 photo ski_zpsjvgqkgaa.jpg

Kentucky is not the place for snow tubing or skiing (unless it's water-skiing on one of our many wonderful lakes).   Searches for snow fun will come up empty and send you north to Indiana or Ohio or east into West Virginia. Perhaps a jaunt down to TN, that's an option.

If you want to ski or snow tube throughout KY, it seems you are on your own to find a hill or path!

Indiana: Perfect North, Paoli Peaks

Ohio: Snow Tubing at Beach Mountain

West Virginia: Here's a good website for referencing options: http://www.goskiwv.com/

TennesseeOber Gatlinburg is a full service option

5 Fun (Inexpensive) Activities for Winter Fun in Kentucky

January is a difficult month. People are coming down off of the excitement of the holidays, those bills are coming in from December gift spending and it's dark and cold.  Sounds thrilling, huh? Well, don't fret too much - you can make it through the month and still have some fun!

photo 5 Fun Winter Places in_zpsq62kipdi.png

1) Monkey Joe's in Lexington is an inexpensive option for indoor fun because there's no fee for adults and it is just $5 for toddlers age 2 and under.  The entire place is for kids 12 and under and they do have a frequency pass for discounts if you live close enough to take advantage of it. If it's a day trip, tie it in with something else fun in Lexington - LexFun4Kids has plenty of ideas.

2) The Kentucky Derby Museum has a new movie for their 360 degree theater - "The Greatest Race."  What we love about this museum is that there's no admission fee for kids 5 and under.  And, it's actually a pretty kid-friendly place to visit.

3) Have you checked Groupon lately?  They have deals for places all over KY.  We've seen discounts for upcoming shows, museums and more.   Click here to see the deal - great for all ages!

4) The Highlands Museum & Discovery Center in Ashland offers something for everyone. They have a lot about area history, an exhibit about space, even a little dig area for kids that are into dinos and fossils.  It's just $6.50 for adult admission, $5 for kids ages 2 and older and free for kids under the age of 2.

5) Totter's Otterville in Covington is geared toward kids ages 10 and younger. It's around $9 for admission but there's no fee for parents.  In my opinion, if they can get active and have a variety of things to do for an extended period of time, anything under $10 is a steal!   They have special events each day - see here - the rooms are endless.

Staying Active as a family in the New Year

Now that 2016 is officially here and most of the treats have been thrown out (or eaten) it is time to think about what we will do with the rest of the year.

Let's face it, we can't have a party all year! If I have learned anything about my family and myself over the last 2 weeks of break it is that we don't do well cooped up.

So I was thinking about ways to stay active as a family, both indoors and out!

Take a hike!

This activity is a free activity at most of our state parks and is a great way to sneak in a little learning. Grab a trail book and do a scavenger hunt along the way.

Jump Around!

Kentucky is home to many trampoline parks and not only are they lots of fun, they are a good work out as well! I was once told that jumping on a trampoline for 7 minutes straight is the equivalent of running a mile. With places like House of Boom and Sky Zone scattered all over Kentucky you have lots of choices!

Hit the gym!

Most gyms offer childcare with the cost of your membership. So while you are getting your sweat on, your kids can blow off steam playing with other kiddos!

Go to the Playground!

Yes, we know it is cold outside, but that is why we have jackets! Just a few minutes of activity outside and away from your house will do everyone a lot of good!

We'd love to hear what you and your family do to stay active in the colder months!
