Fall Family Fun at the Salato Wildlife Center

With cooler temps on the way, are you itching to get outside with the family…..in jeans and hoodies?  Indeed, it’s that time of year.  We love the Salato Wildlife Center in Frankfort and we are not the only ones.  It’s a well-kept place to visit that’s not as commercial as a big zoo but not as rustic as a nature preserve.  It’s a wonderful place to spend a day! Check out this helpful post by LexFun4Kids about Fall events at the Salato Wildlife Center. Here’s a review by Louisville Family Fun as well.  Click here. Stephanie

The Children’s Garden at the University of Kentucky Arboretum

Recently, I decided to take my family and meet some friends at the children’s garden at the UK arboretum in Lexington. The Arboretum just next to the UK campus is comprised of a 100 acres of gardens that showcase Kentucky landscapes. It is great for walking, running, biking and picnicking. The arboretum also has events and gardening workshops throughout the year. We had a picnic is a grassy spot in the shade of a large tree and then headed to the children’s garden. While the arboretum itself is free, there is a fee of $3 per person to enter the

The Parklands of Floyds Fork – East Louisville

The Parklands of Floyds Fork is a large park system in East Louisville. When it is completed in 2015, it will include five separate but connected parks that will comprise a quarter of the Louisville Loop. There are hiking and biking trails, grasslands and wetlands, canoeing and fishing spots, a dog park, and playgrounds and spraygrounds. This is my family’s go-to spot for after work and weekend hiking. It’s close by, clean, and has excellent facilities, and it seems to have new hiking trails every time we go. We usually start off near the water fountain at Beckley Creek Park.

Bluegrass in the Park Folklife Festival in Henderson, KY

I believe this is what we would call a true Kentucky event.  Combining all of the things we love – music, food, the outdoors and it’s family friendly.  Spend one day or two in Henderson, KY and see a variety of performances.  Wouldn’t this be a great way to say goodbye to summer?  It’s always the second weekend in August. According to their FAQ page – the concerts are all FREE. Say WHAT?!?!?  FREE is *insert high pitched voice* awesome.  When you are toting kids along – cost can add up so free admission is key.
